About Us

"When God gives you a vision, transact business on that line no matter what it costs."

-- Oswald Chambers

Our Facility

The design of our facility and many of our management practices make our kennel unique in the United States and possibly the world. We are not aware of any other kennel in existence today that has invested as heavily in the comfort and well being of their animals as Cedar Lane Breeders.

A management feature of our kennel that differentiates us from all others, is that anyone who enters our facility must first take a shower and change into clothing that we provide. No clothing or footwear that is worn outside of the facility is allowed past the shower area. Although other kennel owners may view this as excessive and unnecessary, it is a management technique successfully used by other segments of animal production to control the introduction of parasites and disease organisms into the facility.

Another uncommon feature of our kennel is that our entire facility is environmentally controlled. This unique design not only allows us to eliminate radical changes in outside temperatures and weather conditions, but also any possibility of our dogs being exposed to harmful diseases or parasites that may be carried and transmitted by birds, insects and wild animals.

Our Family

We are a traditional Mid-western family farming operation located in north central Kansas, two miles from the Nebraska border. The part of our home that currently serves as our office was built by Jim’s great-grandfather in 1903. We take great pride in the fact that our grandchildren are the sixth generation of our family to have spent time in this house.

Our oldest son Lannin and his wife Melanie live nearby, along with their two sons Chandler and Taran, and their Bichon Frise, Thomas. Our younger son Cole lives in a small town four miles from our farm. His immediate family consists of two Jack Russell Terriers named Ryken and Revili. All family members are involved with the operation of Cedar Lane Breeders, as well as other aspects of the farming business.

Although not a family member, Nathan Saathoff has worked at the Zoltenko farm since the age of fifteen and has been involved in nearly every aspect of the farming operation. In fact, he was responsible for the entire fifteen-month construction project of our kennel facility. Today Nate serves as the managing partner of Cedar Lane Breeders. He has a daughter named Kennedie, who likes to come to work with her daddy so she can spend time playing with the puppies.

Our Story

Before we began construction of our kennel facility in April of 2004, we all agreed that our mission for Cedar Lane Breeders was to have a lasting and positive impact in the United States pet industry. Our personalities and values would simply not allow us to be just another breeder in a business where mediocrity is common and so readily accepted. We felt we could raise the bar of excellence to a new level that may eventually become a standard for other kennels to someday follow.

While growing up on the family farm, Jim was richly blessed to have his grandparents live only a half mile up the road from his house. His grandpa and grandma were his mentors and instilled within him, strong work and business ethics, built on a foundation of Christian values. He was taught that conducting business and dealing with people properly, meant doing the right thing in every situation, even when it was not convenient. As a company Cedar Lane Breeders continues to embrace this philosophy.

Meet Our Veterinarian

We consider ourselves fortunate and blessed to have a veterinarian on our team with the qualifications and expertise of Dr. Roger McCartney. His vast knowledge is the result of thirty years of experience in the field of kennel management, animal health and canine care.

Dr. McCartney grew up on his parent’s family farm near Lebanon, Kansas. After graduating from high school he attended Kansas State University, where he earned his degree in veterinary medicine in 1970. He and his wife Charlene have been married for forty-one years, and have owned and operated their veterinary clinic in Belleville, Kansas since 1972.

Dr. McCartney visits our kennel on a weekly basis, giving each of our puppies a two hundred- point health check. During his weekly visits, Dr. McCartney also consults with our team members and the management, answering production questions and making recommendations that continually challenge us to strive for improvement and perfection.

My two puppies are the rave of the neighborhood and my veternarian. When I took Pebbles and Bamm Bamm to get their shots, a lady in the lobby offered to buy my Bamm Bamm right then and there in the lobby! The veterinarian Dr. Seeba said the pups were very healthy and good natured. He even asked me where I bought them...He seemed surprised that I found an excellent breeder via internet. I told him that I have good instincts about people and ask a lot of questions. If they don't get sick of my questions, then I know they are good and reputable to do business with. So, if you hear from someone in Alaska, it's probably through me or my veterinarian. I renamed them from Sport and Shannon to Pebbles and Bamm.
