Purebred or Designer

At Cedar Lane Breeders we offer multiple breeds of puppies from which prospective pet owners may choose their new family member. By offering a variety of breeds, we can better match future pet owners with a puppy that will fit their present circumstances and life-style. At Cedar Lane Breeders, we offer nineteen different pure breeds as well as several cross or "designer breeds". To aid in your decision making process, as to which individual breed of puppy will make the best pet for you, we feel it is important that you first understand the characteristics and qualities that differentiate a purebred dog and a designer dog.

Purebred

A purebred dog is one whose ancestors have been bred for many generations to only dogs of the same breed. In most cases, each breed registry has written standards for that particular breed that all breeders must follow. Only animals that fall within the guidelines of the documented standards should be allowed to reproduce.

Some pet owners prefer a pure line animal as opposed to a mixed breed, because the characteristics and traits of the purebred are more predictable than that of a crossbred dog. Each puppy born within a pure breed should be relatively similar in size, temperament and other traits that characterize that particular breed. With this information, the pet owner can more accurately anticipate the puppy’s needs and limitations as it develops and grows into adulthood.

Designer Breeds

A "designer breed" is the result of two dogs of documented purebred ancestry being intentionally mated, with the desire to create an animal that is unique to either of the parents. When two purebred animals of any species are mated, the resulting progeny is referred to as an F1, or a first generation cross.

Puppies that are F1's possess a quality referred to by breeders as "hybrid vigor" or "heterosis". In other species where crossing purebreds is a common practice, hybrid vigor has been proven to produce a hardier animal with enhanced performance and health. A "designer breed" puppy should always be the result of crossing two purebred animals. If crossbred dogs are allowed to breed, their puppies will not be an F1 cross, and they will have less hybrid vigor than a puppy from the mating of two pure lines.

At Cedar Lane Breeders, all purebred crosses are pre-determined and carefully selected, with clear objectives in mind. It is important to us that the "designer breeds" we create must possess qualities that are desirable and beneficial to the prospective pet owner.

Summary

The decision as to which kind of puppy you should buy often comes down to personal preference. Both, purebred and designer puppies will make equally good companions and pets for their owners. The most important thing to consider when deciding which breed to select, is to find a puppy whose personality and physical characteristics will be a good match for the personality and lifestyle of it's new owner.

Elaine Bales

My two puppies are the rave of the neighborhood and my veternarian. When I took Pebbles and Bamm Bamm to get their shots, a lady in the lobby offered to buy my Bamm Bamm right then and there in the lobby! The veterinarian Dr. Seeba said the pups were very healthy and good natured. He even asked me where I bought them...He seemed surprised that I found an excellent breeder via internet. I told him that I have good instincts about people and ask a lot of questions. If they don't get sick of my questions, then I know they are good and reputable to do business with. So, if you hear from someone in Alaska, it's probably through me or my veterinarian. I renamed them from Sport and Shannon to Pebbles and Bamm.
